Clinical Experience in Female Benign Breast Disease

Abstract
254 patients with benign breast disorder were treated by excision from 1985 through 1988 at the department of Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital and Sejong General Hospital and the data were analysed retrospectively. The age distribution
of all
patients was 23 cases in 2nd, 90 cases in 3rd, 75 cases in 4th, 53 cases in 5th, and 13 cases in 6th decades.
Histologically, 254 patients comparised 111 cases of bfibrocystic disease (43.7%), 83 cases of fibroadenoma (32.7%), 26 cases of intraductal papilloma (1%), 12 cases of mammary duct ectasia (0.5%), 13 cases of breast abscess, 8 cases of
cystosarcoma
phyllodes, 4 cases of fat necrosis, and 3 cases of accessory breast.
The most frequent chief complaints were palpable breast mass (76%), 345 breast masses were excised from 254 cases of patients. 164 cases (47.5%) were at right side and 181 cases (52.5%) were at left side of breast.
When we divided the breast into four-quadrants, regardless of laterality, 192 cases (56%) were at upper outer quadrants, 71 cases (20%) at upper inner quadrants, 45 cases (13%) at lower outer quadrants, 37 cases (11%) at lower inner quadrants.
We recommend fine needle aspirationcytology for patient with discrete breast lump, followed by open biopsy if necessary. If there is no discrete lump in patient with miscellaneous breast complaints, mammography is recommended to identify
impapable
breast lesions. Symptomatic treatment and close follow-up are necessary in patient with normal mammographic findings.
